Samson Hair Restoration has done a study to see the results laser hair therapy has on hair transplants to treat hair loss. Overall, low level laser hair therapy is beneficial to patients who undergo a hair transplant procedure. At a minimum the therapy will help them see results sooner. There appeared to be no deleterious effects from the therapy, and added benefits to native, non-transplanted hair.
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) June 30, 2010 -- Samson Hair Restoration announced today the results from its study involving the use of laser hair therapy in combination with hair transplants to treat hair loss. The goal of the three – year study was to evaluate whether the use of laser hair therapy significantly affected results obtained through hair transplantation. Participating patients had a hair transplant procedure and then had laser hair therapy 2 – 3 times per week, for 20 minutes per session, utilizing low level laser therapy, also known as “cool laser” therapy, at a wavelength of approximately 650 nanometers, for up to one year. Samson has concluded that laser hair therapy clearly speeds regrowth of transplanted hair, improves the texture of newly growing transplanted hair, and helps retain native hair. Less clear was whether laser hair therapy increases the yield from the hair transplant procedure. “It is quite clear that lasers aid in hair transplant procedures and will usually help patients obtain a more impressive final result if used as directed,” commented William McCullough, President of Samson Hair Restoration. “Of the sixteen plus years that I’ve been involved in the hair transplant field, lasers were really only commonly used during the past three. We wanted to evaluate for ourselves whether or not they offered a significant benefit to patients. And, our conclusion is that they do,” continued McCullough. On average, transplanted hair follicles begin to grow new hair at about 90 days following the procedure. Patients in the study saw new growth beginning significantly earlier, some as soon as one month following their procedures. “With traditional hair transplants, without the use of lasers, we never saw growth as soon as we do with laser hair therapy. In most cases, our regular laser users saw growth begin in 1 ½ to 2 months following their procedures and some as early as 1 month,” added McCullough. Cool laser therapy speeds healing following the trauma of a hair transplant procedure. The therapy accelerates the recruitment of blood vessels to nourish the transplanted grafts. While this would seem to increase the survivability of transplanted grafts, the Samson study stops short of making this claim. Graft survivability with good surgical technique and quality medical technicians performing the dissection and placement is felt to be in the 90 – 95% range. It is very difficult to assess whether laser hair therapy could improve upon this range.
