If you have material that you would not like to be found again, you can take apart the harddrive with a screwdriver, and smash the plates inside. Or take a drill, and drill through the harddrive in multiple places.

Do not donate the harddrive. Do not give the harddrive to Best Buy for them to wipe clean. Do not give the harddrive to friends for their use. Do not leave the harddrive in a closet. Do not throw the harddrive in the trash without thoroughly and physically smashing the harddrive.

Or, as Sigourney Weaver said in the movie Aliens, “Nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.”

Local radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge was collecting donations for the officers’ families on air last Thursday via his not-for-profit organization, the BTLS Foundation, a 501(C)3 dedicated to raising awareness and donations for worthy community causes or victims. Upon hearing this, Dr. Gary Kompothecras, founder of the free accident and injury helpline 1-800-ASK-GARY, was immediately moved to donate $5000 to the widows of the two fallen officers. Sara Kocab, just 29, is pregnant with the couple’s first child. Kelly Curtis is left to raise four sons on her own.

The BTLS Foundation raised more than $30,000 that day for Curtis and Kocab families but Dr. Gary’s donation was the single largest made by any individual. Says Bubba, “we had such an outpouring of support but Dr. Gary is usually the first one there, and always there if someone needs him. We were broadcasting and right away I got a text from Gary saying he was donating $5000 to the families — it almost made me cry.”
