Synopsis:

Married illegal immigrant couple, Joyce (Omoni Oboli) and Paul Unanga (Sam Sarpong) have been ordered by the US immigration to leave the country by voluntary departure. They agree to leave; but only after Joyce who is 5 months pregnant delivers her baby in the US. This will guarantee automatic US citizenship for their child. The couple ignores the deportation order, and go into hiding. Later, Paul is caught and deported by a team of overzealous Immigration officers, led by agent Mark Castello (Michael Scratch). This leaves Joyce to struggle on her own to accomplish their dream.

Then, Joyce meets Susan Backley (Terri Oliver), a married freelance writer who offers to help her with free accommodation until her baby is born. Now, with the help of Susan, Joyce sets out on the most daring journey of her life to achieve the “American Dream” for her unborn child. She will try by any means necessary.

The theme of the movie is about the Love, dreams, desperation, betrayal, hope and struggles, faced by these non-citizens in order to belong to the American society.

“Anchor Baby” is actually a derogatory term for children born by immigrants or other non-citizens in the United States. The movie Anchor Baby is set in the United States, but was shot in Brampton and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

A brief background on the term Anchor Baby:

The term, Anchor Baby is not new, at least not in the US. Definition: According to the "Double Tongued Dictionary" Anchor baby: a child born of an immigrant in the United States, said to be a device by which a family can find legal foothold in the US, since those children are automatically allowed to choose American citizenship. Also anchor child, a very young immigrant who will later sponsor citizenship for family members who are still abroad. It’s becoming clearer who an Anchor baby is; based on that definition alone.

You should know though that Anchor babies don’t have to choose to be U.S citizens, their citizenships are automatic. In Nigeria alone, the number of women who travel to the United States to have their children is staggering, yet Nigeria is not even the highest producer of US "Anchor Babies". There are Latinos, Asians, other Africans, etc. The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimates there are currently more than 425,000 children born to illegal aliens each year. This figure is based on the crude birth rate of the total foreign-born population (33 births per 1000) and the size of the illegal alien population (13 million in 2008).

Recent news articles show that Arizona is currently targeting "Anchor Baby" citizenship. The author of the most controversial new immigration law in Arizona Republican state Sen. Russell Pearce is considering another proposal that would stop the children of illegal immigrants from becoming US citizens if they were born in the United States. This is one of the main struggles depicted in the movie Anchor Baby.
