A new law goes into effect today, July 1, 2010, that increases the speed limit in certain parts of Virginia to 70 mph. Although some may be pleased with this action, what many motorists may not realize is that Virginia Code Section 46.2.862 remains unchanged.
Most motorists are under the impression that they get a 10 mph cushion over the actual speed limit.

Although some may be pleased with this action, what many motorists may not realize is that Virginia Code Section 46.2.862 remains unchanged. Thus, 81 in a 70 mph zone is a misdemeanor criminal offense of Reckless Driving Speeding in Virginia.

However, doing just 11 mph over the speed limit in a 70 mph zone in Virginia is Reckless Driving Speeding- the most serious class of criminal misdemeanor offenses in Virginia."
