Greve notes in the texting video: "The average brake time is 18 percent slower when you're on the phone." Other videos address dangerous driving habits such as speeding and impaired driving.

As of Dec. 1, 2009, North Carolina drivers caught texting while driving face a fine of $100, plus court fees. A study released in December 2009 by University of Utah psychologists found that motorists who wrote text messages while driving were six times more likely to crash than those who didn't text while driving. A study released in January 2010 by the National Safety Council found that 28 percent of all traffic accidents occurred as people talked on cell phones or sent text messages while driving. On Jan. 26, the federal Transportation Department announced a new ban on texting by truck and bus drivers while operating commercial vehicles.

"The accident statistics are alarming and should be a warning message to all Carolina drivers who text or use a cell phone while behind the wheel," Greve said.
