According to Ambrose, one example of a free credit report scam is when an innocent consumer responds to a Craigslist ad for a fake job posted by a Craigslist scammer using the name of a reputable, usually well-known business. Subsequent e-mail communications from the scammer tell the victim that in order to move forward to the next stage of the interview or rental-application process, they have to click the link provided by the scammer and get a credit report that they will then provide to the fake entity during their future interview or apartment visit. Once the scammer tells the victim where to purchase of the credit report, the victim never hears from them again.
"These scammers are abusing the legitimate method of online advertising called 'affiliate marketing'," said Ambrose. "Most companies who do business on the internet use some form of affiliate marketing to drive traffic and sales to their websites. This includes the world's largest retailers, banks and other corporations. It's a shame that these scammers are also tarnishing the reputations of the corporations whose names they are fraudulently using as fake job posters."
