As statistics demonstrating the dangers of text messaging while driving accumulate, Nielsen & Senior Attorneys cite the recent tightening of state laws in an effort to keep drivers educated.
Salt Lake City, UT (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 10, 2010 -- Whether it’s a teen texting a friend or a businessman sending and receiving emails on his BlackBerry, cell phones go where we go. Because they’re no longer reserved for the technically savvy, cell phones are now being used by people of all ages – all too commonly while operating a vehicle. Nielsen & Senior, a Utah law firm, has noticed the swelling statistics that illustrate the dangers of texting while driving and hope to keep drivers educated about the newly resulting laws.
According to the American Automobile Association, the risk of a car accident increases by 50% when a driver is text messaging and a Harvard report justified this claim when it stated that 570,000 automobile accidents are caused each year by cell phone usage behind the wheel – 2,600 resulting in death.
In addition, a AAA report claims that 21% of all fatal car crashes involving teens between the ages of 16 and 19 were also the result of cell phone distraction.
With all of this mounting evidence, 6 states have now banned all drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving and 24 states have banned text messaging from behind the wheel. As for states like Utah, cell phone use is classified as an offense only if the driver is cited for some other moving violation – but an offense nonetheless.
The numbers are in and the results show a clear danger when driving and text messaging are combined. States are cracking down and law firms such as Nielsen & Senior are doing their part to keep people educated on the new laws and the dangers of breaking them.
