Federal Study To Examine Asbestos Risk Among Firefighters

New York attorney Joseph W. Belluck, who handles mesothelioma lawsuits related to asbestos exposure, says "federal researchers should be commended for tackling the complex question of firefighting and cancer risk."

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 6, 2010 -- A new federal study should help improve understanding of whether firefighters are at increased risk of developing cancer from exposure to contaminants such as asbestos, New York attorney Joseph W. Belluck said.

“Federal researchers should be commended for tackling the complex question of firefighting and cancer risk,” said Belluck, a partner in Belluck & Fox LLP, a New York law firm that represents victims of asbestos-related disease, including mesothelioma. “There is a need for a more precise knowledge of the occupational health risks faced by this group of brave public servants. It could prevent disease and save lives.”
Federal researchers should be commended for tackling the complex question of firefighting and cancer risk.
The U.S. Fire Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will team up to examine the health data of more than 18,000 current and retired career firefighters to study whether they face an increased risk of cancers. Battling blazes, firefighters are exposed to soot, smoke, byproducts of combustion and toxic contaminants from building materials, such as formaldehyde and asbestos.

By analyzing cancer cases and cancer deaths among firefighters, researchers will try to determine whether firefighters as a group develop more cancers and whether the cancers are associated with exposures to particular contaminants. For example, mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lung closely associated with exposure to asbestos.

The study improves upon earlier studies of firefighters by significantly increasing the number of individuals whose health data will be analyzed.

“If the study shows that firefighters as a group have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma, there should be additional safety precautions for firefighters to prevent asbestos exposure," Belluck said. "Firefighters face enough risks on the job without potentially deadly exposure to asbestos. ”

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is the federal agency that conducts research and makes recommendations for preventing work-related injury, illness and death. The U.S. Fire Administration is an agency within the Department of Homeland Security that provides national leadership in prevention and preparedness for fire and emergency rescue services.
