A Senate report released over the weekend questioned the safety of Avandia, linking it to elevated heart risks and alleging that GlaxoSmithKline underplayed information and attempted to suppress medical professionals who raised concerns. According to reports, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to push for a recall of Avandia - once the world's top selling diabetes drug.

"Once again we see too little too late from big pharma. We're talking about a drug that had annual sales of more than $1 billion last year. Now they're saying it may not be safe."

This news comes on the heels of Glaxo's announcement last week that it is recalling its zinc-containing Poligrip denture cream products, after dozens of lawsuits were filed claiming that high levels of zinc caused neurological problems for denture wearers.

Many are already comparing Glaxo's Avandia issues to the crisis caused by Vioxx for pharma giant Merck three years ago, when thousands of lawsuits were filed alledgedly linking Vioxx to heart attacks.

"The Vioxx and Avandia cases have a lot in common," said Sokolove. "In both cases you have huge pharmaceutical companies that allegedly knew of the potential safety risks, and kept selling the products anyway. That should open them up to all kinds of legal liability.
