James Scott Farrin Attorney Gives Free Legal Advice to Spanish-Speakers

Attorney Rick Fleming, managing attorney for the Social Security Department of the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, participated as a Spanish-speaking lawyer at the North Carolina Bar Association’s (NCBA) third annual “4ALL Statewide Service Day” on March 5.

Durham, NC (PRWEB) March 30, 2010 -- Attorney Rick Fleming, managing attorney for the Social Security Department of the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, participated as a Spanish-speaking lawyer at the North Carolina Bar Association’s (NCBA) third annual “4ALL Statewide Service Day” on March 5.

Through the event, low-income people throughout North Carolina could call a toll-free number and speak with an attorney about a variety of legal issues. Throughout the day, 424 attorneys fielded 8,467 calls from seven call centers located in Asheville, Cary, Charlotte, Greensboro, Greenville, Raleigh and Wilmington, North Carolina.

“On the attorney side, it feels great to give back to the community. I like to offer resources to a section of the community (Latino) that is so marginalized and fearful about talking with a lawyer,” said Attorney Rick Fleming at James Scott Farrin.
The Cary, North Carolina center, where Rick Fleming volunteered, was the only dedicated Spanish-language call center. Rick Fleming answered about two dozen calls dealing with issues ranging from Social Security Disability and Workers’ Compensation to personal injury and immigration.

“This event is extremely valuable from both sides,” he said. “So many people are intimidated or afraid to call a law firm. But events like these are very informal, comfortable and friendly. People can call from their own living room and it is totally anonymous.

Rick Fleming is a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Social Security Disability Law who is fluent in both English and Spanish. He was recently appointed as Chair of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice’s (NCAJ) Disability Advocacy Section (DAS), a role that will commence on July 1. He has been on the NCAJ Disability Advocacy Section’s Executive Committee for more than five years. Rick Fleming is also a sustaining member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR).

Rick Fleming has been a member of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) since 1997. In addition to the 4ALL Statewide Service Day event, Rick Fleming has volunteered for two years with Univision 40 television’s Linea Abierta (Open Line) phone-an-attorney project. He plans to participate in the Univision 40’s 2010 Linea Abierta project again later this year.

The North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA), founded in 1899, is a voluntary organization of lawyers, paralegals and law students dedicated to serving the public and the legal profession. The North Carolina Bar Association is not formally affiliated with the North Carolina State Bar, which regulates the practice of law in North Carolina.
