The new voluntary insurance program is designed to assist people who become unable to perform two or more functional daily activities by paying for non-medical services and support; traditionally not covered under Medicare plans. This allows seniors to remain in their homes and communities for much longer and maintain a higher quality of life. With more than 5 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, this piece of care-centered legislation is exactly what families have been waiting for. Individuals pay premiums into the plan, just like regular private insurance, while they are working. After they can no longer work, they become eligible for cash benefits that can be used to pay for assistive technology, accessible transportation, homemaker services, respite care, home modifications, personal assistance services as well as home care aids.
