New York, New York (PRWEB) March 29, 2010 -- Connor Donohue, a 24-year-old New York resident plummeted to his death on Sunday, March 14, after the rail of his 24th floor Murray Hill terrace broke away. The building had fielded many prior complaints about the state of the balconies, which residents have described as "wobbly", "crumbling" and "insecure". In one apartment, the horizontal bar along a side of the balcony railing wasn't even connected to the corner vertical post. With slight effort, the entire thing shook.
Officials speculate that Donohue, a well-liked social worker, was most likely leaning against the railing's loose vertical bars before he fell.
Jennifer Towers Apartment Corp., located at 330 E. 39th St., is owned by real-estate tycoon Fraydun Manocherian. The Department of Buildings says the building failed to properly inspect its exterior and balconies as required by law and has $10,750 in outstanding fines.
The New York building owner was required to hire engineers to inspect the structure's exterior and submit a report to the Buildings Department by early 2007
The building is now under investigation and residents are forbidden to go out on their balconies until the building owner submits an engineering report that says they are safe.
The Department of Buildings is now trying to determine if other balconies around New York are at risk.
New York personal injury lawyers say that New York City law requires owners of buildings at least seven stories high to hire private engineers to inspect the exterior walls, air conditioners and balconies every five years. The reports then needs to be submitted to the DOB.
