(Vocus/PRWEB ) March 30, 2010 -- The Andrus Center for Public Policy and the Idaho Press Club will present a public affairs seminar, “A Delicate Balance: Judges, Juries, Lawyers and Journalists” on April 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the Boise Centre.
The American approach to justice, embodied in U.S. Constitution and influenced by more than two centuries of tradition and precedent, is one of the fundamental strengths of the United States. The First Amendment to the Constitution, guaranteeing freedom of the press, is of equal importance to the American system. From time-to-time, the rights inherent in the justice system come in conflict with the rights inherent in the First Amendment and judges, juries, lawyers and journalists find that they must carefully work to maintain “a delicate balance” of conflicting rights.
Lawyers, judges, journalists and the public are invited to attend. Idaho’s Chief Federal District Judge B. Lynn Winmill will keynote the seminar that will also feature University of Idaho Law School Dean Don Burnett, Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wadsen and some of the state’s top journalists. The event agenda is as follows:
Introductions: Governor Cecil D. Andrus, Chairman, Andrus Center for Public Policy
Keynote address: Judge B. Lynn Winmill, Chief Judge, Federal District Court
Panel: “A Delicate Balance” When Rights Collide
Moderator: Marc C. Johnson, Andrus Center for Public Policy President
The panel will be presented with a series of hypothetical situations to illustrate the tension and conflict that often exists when the rights inherent in the justice system collide with rights protected by the First Amendment.
Panelists:
Todd Dvorak, Chief Correspondent, Associated Press Boise Bureau
Dan Popkey, Reporter, Idaho Statesman
Elizabeth Duncan, News Director, Boise State Radio
Betsy Russell, Reporter, Spokesman-Review
Alyson Outen, Former Reporter, KTVB News Group

About the Andrus Center for Public Policy
The Andrus Center for Public Policy is dedicated to independent, non-partisan policy formation on critical issues confronting Idaho and the United States. During the 15 years since its founding, it has brought policymakers together at conferences on such subjects as declining populations of bull trout, federal land management policies, and catastrophic wildland fires. It provides a civil, non-partisan forum for the exchange of divergent views on controversial issues, and the white papers that emerge from the conferences reflect consensus findings. www.andruscenter.org
