Canadian Space Commerce Association Meeting to Highlight Growing Canadian Commercial Space Sector

Bringing together businesses, academics, entrepreneurs, government agencies as well as students to hear and interact with leading experts from the Canadian space sector.

(PRWEB) March 10, 2010 -- The Canadian Space Commerce Association will be holding its annual meeting in Toronto on Tuesday, March 16th with the theme "The Growing Canadian Commercial Space Sector". The meeting will bring together businesses, academics, entrepreneurs, government agencies as well as students to hear and interact with leading experts from the Canadian space sector.

Last November the Canadian Space Agency's Policy and External Relations Directorate released it's 2008 State of the Canadian Space Sector which showed that the Canadian space sector revenues had reached $2.79 billion on 17.8% growth over the previous year. The increase was led by export revenues which increased significantly by 41.5% to a record level of $1.40 billion and accounted for 50% of total revenues. The Canadian space sector in other words is in a growth stage.

This past week in the 2010 budget released by the government was $397 million of new funding for the RADARSAT Constellation Mission. In addition, the Canadian Space Agency had already allocated $100 million for the Constellation. The green light to this project is an important step in maintaining highly skilled jobs and keeping Canada a leader in the Earth Observation field which will benefit the growing Canadian commercial space sector.

The keynote speaker for the one day meeting at the MaRS Discovery District is Dr. Christian Sallaberger of MDA, Canada's largest space company and one of the primary winners of last weeks budget announcement. Sallaberger's talk will be on 'Structuring for Success in the Commercial Space Sector' and we are sure to hear a bit about the RADARSAT Constellation Mission.

But for Canadian businesses to succeed in this tough sector there are many issues they must deal with. They include export controls and when doing business in the United States the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). ITAR reforms are being discussed in Washington with the Obama administration expected to make some changes. To address this issue the CSCA has invited Michael Mineiro, an attorney and the Boeing Fellow at Air and Space Law at McGill University to talk about 'Export Controls and their Impact on the Canadian Space Sector'.

Are you looking to find capital for your new business? Eva-Jane Lark, Host of EVA Interviews: The Business of the new Space Age™ and Vice-President, BMO Nesbitt Burns will speak on the topic of 'Preparing for the Money Conversation' What does a Space entrepreneur need to do to prepare before they start talking to investors, and raising capital? This presentation will discuss the current Space investment environment, recent developments and emerging trends.

Other important issues to be addressed at the meeting include government tax credits in the form of Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED), Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) Program Offset Credits, patents and workforce development for the space industry in Canada.

The meeting is an opportunity for businesses, academics, entrepreneurs, government agencies and students to come together and learn from one another, to network and to help further the Canadian commercial space sector. Registration is open until March 15th and seating is limited. Media are welcome to attend and will have an opportunity to talk to our expert speakers.
