Philadelphia Law Firm Secures Settlement for Victim of Sexual Abuse by Delaware Judge

Kent, partner in the Philadelphia-based law firm Laffey, Bucci & Kent, has completed the settlement of a civil lawsuit against former Judge William C. Bradley, Jr., which culminated in a public admission by Judge Bradley that he molested an 11 year-old boy in 1975.

In the case, Kelly v. Bradley (Case# 1:09-ev-00282-LDD), Kent represented plaintiff Gregory Kelly, who is now living in Nevada. Kelly alleged that he was sexually abused by Judge Bradley when he was 11 years old. The lawsuit was settled with a public admission by Judge Bradley that he was guilty of the abuse, an apology to Kelly and his family, and an undisclosed cash payment to Kelly.

"On or about the evening of Dec. 28, 1975 and Dec. 29, 1975, while present in my home located in Townsend, Delaware, I molested Gregory Kelly, then age 11, through inappropriate sexual contact," said Judge Bradley in his written statement. "I deeply regret any harm I have caused to Gregory Kelly and his family."

Judge Bradley served as a Court of Common Pleas judge in Delaware from 1976 until his resignation from the bench last month.

"We are pleased that our firm was able to secure some degree of justice for our client, but it's important to note that we would not have been able to achieve this outcome were it not for the legislation passed by the State of Delaware in 2007 that repealed the statute of limitations in civil suits relating to child sexual abuse cases and provided a two-year 'window' in which victims can bring a civil action in cases previously barred by the statute," said Kent, a highly regarded attorney who represents victims of crime in civil litigation.
