Dell's Former Chief IP Counsel Moves to Haynes and Boone

Haynes and Boone, LLP has expanded its national IP practice with the addition of former Dell Vice President and Chief IP Legal Counsel Henry N. Garrana, who joins the firm's Austin office as Of Counsel.

Austin (Vocus/PRWEB ) August 17, 2009 -- Haynes and Boone, LLP has expanded its national IP practice with the addition of former Dell Vice President and Chief IP Legal Counsel Henry N. Garrana, who joins the firm's Austin office as Of Counsel.

Mr. Garrana comes to Haynes and Boone after spending the last 14 years building Dell's intellectual property strategy and managing intellectual property litigation. He is an attorney with broad intellectual property experience in both electronics and oil field services technologies, having served as IP counsel for various units of Schlumberger LTD for 17 years prior to joining Dell.

"We are looking forward to this next chapter in Henry's career with Haynes and Boone," said David McCombs, firmwide chair of the Haynes and Boone technology practice. "Henry adds significant depth and a unique perspective that is of great benefit to clients throughout the firm."

Mr. Garrana established the IP function for Dell, developing procedures to capture innovation and create a strategic patent portfolio to counter third-party assertions from industry rivals. He negotiated special indemnity provisions with major component suppliers to mitigate infringement liability, renegotiated all of Dell's major patent licenses, and managed adverse patent negotiations with third parties. In addition, Mr. Garrana was responsible for Dell's patent litigation, which over the past several years averaged more than a dozen active suits annually.

At Schlumberger Technology Corporation in Houston from 1982 to 1995, Mr. Garrana managed the IP function for the Oil Field Services division headquartered in Houston, as well as for research centers in Austin, France and Japan. In particular, he focused efforts on developing strategic patents, helped with the allocation of research and development costs through inter-company licensing arrangements and managed patent litigation and third party patent licensing negotiations.

Mr. Garrana is a graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center, and received his BS in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland.

Haynes and Boone, LLP is an international corporate law firm with offices in Texas, New York, California, Washington, D.C., Mexico City and Moscow, providing a full spectrum of legal services.
