Austin, TX (Vocus/PRWEB ) August 17, 2009 -- Andrews Kurth LLP is pleased to announce that Texas Supreme Court Justice Scott A. Brister will join the firm as a partner. Justice Brister will focus his practice on all aspects of litigation and alternative dispute resolution and will lead the firm’s appellate practice. He will be based in Austin and available to serve clients in all of the firm’s U.S. offices. This will mark Justice Brister’s second tenure with Andrews Kurth, following practice in the litigation section of the firm’s Houston office from 1981 to 1989.

“When I decided it was time to return to private practice, my first thought was to talk to Andrews Kurth,” says Justice Brister. “The firm’s outstanding trial and appellate practice and all the terrific lawyers made this an easy decision.”

A native of Waco, Texas, Justice Brister first was appointed to the Supreme Court of Texas in 2003 by Gov. Rick Perry, and later elected to an additional six-year term on the state’s highest court. Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court he served as a district court judge in Harris County, a justice on the First Court of Appeals in Houston, and Chief Justice of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals in Houston.

“Scott’s extensive trial experience, coupled with his service on all three levels of the state judicial system, makes him ideal for our clients’ needs,” said Bob Jewell, Andrews Kurth Managing Partner.

Board Certified in Civil Appellate, Civil Trial, and Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, Justice Brister earned his law degree from Harvard Law School and his undergraduate degree from Duke University. Following law school, he served as a briefing attorney for Chief Justice Joe Greenhill of the Texas Supreme Court in 1980 and 1981.

“With 20 years on the bench, Scott is not only a highly regarded Supreme Court justice, he is also an experienced and skilled litigator,” says Rex VanMiddlesworth, Managing Partner of the Austin office. “We could not be more pleased to welcome him back to the firm, where we know his experience and judicial perspective will be tremendous assets for our clients.”
