Chicago, Illinois (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 20, 2010 -- The international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP announced today that Thomas D. Sykes has joined its Chicago office as a Shareholder in the Tax Practice. He comes to Greenberg Traurig from McDermott, Will & Emery LLP where he was a Partner.
Sykes has focused his practice on tax controversies, including tax litigation in all forums, for more than 25 years. He represents some of the United States’ most successful and well-known individuals, for-profit corporations and tax-exempt organizations. He has litigated civil and criminal tax issues in trial and appellate courts in approximately 25 federal jurisdictions nationwide.
In recent years, Sykes has been at the forefront of the litigation over FICA tax paid on stipends provided to medical residents which recently led to a global concession of the issue by the IRS. He was lead counsel in landmark litigation for a prominent teaching hospital in the U.S. District Court and subsequently in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago.Previously, Sykes spent almost 14 years with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Tax Division in Washington, D.C., where he litigated or directly supervised the litigation of approximately 175 tax cases in the Court of Federal Claims, in U.S. District Courts and in a U.S. Court of Appeals. He is a four-time recipient of Outstanding Attorney awards from the Tax Division.
