Chino, CA (PRWEB) May 13, 2010 -- Republican Congressional Candidate Lee McGroarty responds to an editorial by former Assistant Secretary of HUD Orlando Cabrera in support of Congressman Gary Miller and his numerous Federal earmarks. According to the Whittier Daily News, Miller's activities are under review by the FBI and the San Bernardino County District Attorney.
McGroarty's response to Assistant Secretary Cabrera is as follows:
"In your editorial defending Congressman Gary Miller, you took great pride in listing the fact that you are CEO of Hope through Housing Foundation, a non-profit organization that exists by applying for “funds through congressional offices in those districts where we serve”. In other words, your organization exists on the backs of the American taxpayer via Federal earmarks.
With all due respect Mr. Cabrera, isn’t our Republican Party supposed to be about smaller government and fiscal discipline? If your organization needs funding, find it locally or through the private sector. Why are we funding your businesses via federal earmarks, particularly when there are very few affordable housing projects run by your organization in Congressman Miller’s 42nd District?
I have no doubt your organization has helped improve the lives of many needy people. Personally, I am sympathetic to your causes. However, it is not the role of the Federal government to infuse money into non-profits, particularly when we are facing an economic uncertainty not seen since the Great Depression. When private sector gives to charity, it's noble. When government gives to charity, it's socialism.
I also agree with House Minority Leader Boehner's call for an earmark moratorium to all Republican congressional leaders, including Congressman Miller. As a fellow Republican, are you disagreeing with Minority Leader Boehner’s moratorium? Should we continue with reckless spending of taxpayer dollars, regardless of the worthy cause it may have for some?
You also accused me of a “willingness to misuse facts”. Mr. Cabrera, here are some “undeniable facts that cannot be mischaracterized”:
- Since 2004, Congressman Miller received more than $50,000 in campaign contributions from Jeffrey Burum and associates. (CampaignMoney.com)
- National Housing Corporation (NHC), Community Renaissance Corporation (CORE), and Hope Through Housing Foundation all specialize in affordable housing and were all founded and run by Jeffrey Burum. (Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, among others)
- Jeffrey Burum, according to numerous media sources, is at the center of “the biggest political corruption scandal in San Bernardino County history” involving a $102 million settlement between the County and Colonies LLP. (InlandPolitics.com)
- Since 2007, Congressman Gary Miller, a current member and former Vice-Chair of the Housing Sub-committee, according to Legistorm.com, the OC Register and others, has requested at least ten (10) separate earmarks, for Jeffrey Burum’s three (3) non-profit organizations, each located at the same mailing address in Rancho Cucamonga… which happens to be outside his district.
Oh yes, one more “undeniable fact” I forgot to mention:
- Gary Miller owns more than 340 acres of land in Rancho Cucamonga known as the Carrari Ranch project. According to the San Bernardino Sun, among others, this land is slated for possible rezoning by the Rancho Cucamonga City Council, where a number of council members have received PAC money from Jeffrey Burum and associates. If successful, Congressman Miller stands to make millions on the increased market value of the property.
If these facts don't point to a possible "conflict of interest", then I don't know what does. This is unacceptable and for you not to recognize this shows your ignorance towards the frustration of many Americans who believe our system of government has been corrupted. The People deserve better and Congressman Miller owes his constituents an explanation.
At best, these facts are concerning on many levels. At worst, this is an absolute abuse of power. Congressman Miller needs to answer these issues, not you.
I appreciate your defense of the indefensible, but it is time to focus your attention on obtaining funding from other sources for your organization other than the federal government.
Most Sincerely,
Lee McGroarty
Republican Candidate, CA 42nd Congressional District"
