Severe Adverse Drug Reaction is the Fourth Leading Cause of Death in the U.S.*
Consumers need to be very aware of the potential side effects of any medication they are taking, whether it’s a prescription or an over-the-counter drug.
Wellesley, MA (PRWEB) March 23, 2010 -- Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) - and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), a more life-threatening form of SJS – is a severe adverse reaction to a drug, most commonly an anticonvulsant or antibiotic. Adverse drug reactions claim the lives of nearly 150,000 people a year*; SJS and TEN can result in death if left untreated and impact people of any age but are most prevalent among children. SJS and TEN can be a reaction to any medication or over-the-counter drug including Advil, AlloPurinol, Dilantin, Tegretol, and Levaquin.
“Consumers need to be very aware of the potential side effects of any medication they are taking, whether it’s a prescription or an over-the-counter drug. By familiarizing yourself with the facts, you can react quickly if you notice any symptoms and take immediate action in order to prevent hospitalization and possibly death,” says James Sokolove, Chairman of Sokolove Law, one of the nation’s largest marketers of legal services.
SJS affects the skin and mucous membranes lining inside the nose, mouth and lungs and is characterized by rashes, blisters and splotches on the skin, flu-like symptoms, persistent fever, swelling and peeling. TEN is the more severe form of SJS and usually affects a larger body surface area.
On March 22, Discovery Health’s popular show “Mystery Diagnosis” aired the story of Julie McCawley, a girl who was diagnosed with SJS at 11 months old after taking a dose of an anticonvulsant medication. She spent 4 weeks fighting for her life and has since undergone 13 surgeries to counter the lasting effects of SJS.
“Julie’s story serves as a warning to the many Americans who take over-the-counter and prescription drugs on an almost daily basis. Very few consumers are aware that a simple dosage of Advil taken to relieve pain can actually lead to this debilitating, traumatizing, and in the most severe cases- a life threatening situation,” says Sokolove.
