Attorney Joe Belluck Hails Department Of Defense For Increased Funding Of Mesothelioma Research

Belluck, whose New York law firm sponsors MesotheliomaHelp.Net, says boost in spending recognized overlooked disease that kills thousands each year.

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 17, 2010 -- A leading attorney for victims of the asbestos-related disease mesothelioma today praised the U.S. Department of Defense for stepping up its spending on research into new ways to treat the fatal disease caused by asbestos exposure, a once common hazard of military work.

This disease is serious and relentless and so must be the attempt to cure it. Veterans who were willing to fight for their country now must have their country fight for them.
“This boost in dollars finally recognizes a condition that has been overlooked and under-researched for far too long,” said Joseph W. Belluck, a partner in Belluck & Fox, LLP, a New York law firm that represents victims of asbestos-related disease. His firm sponsors an online resource for mesothelioma victims, http://www.mesotheliomahelp.net/ .

"With more funds and more focus, there’s a chance of hope for victims and their families who’ve too often had none,” Belluck said. "This has been an orphan disease too long."

The Department of Defense effort includes awards totaling several million dollars for three important mesothelioma projects. The funds will support research into early detection of the disease and the development of new treatments, including clinical trials for a promising new vaccine that will directly impact patients.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelial cells, caused by breathing in asbestos fibers that become lodged in the thin membrane that lines and encases the lungs. For several decades, asbestos-containing materials were used in a wide variety of products.

Belluck said the funding increase must be only the beginning of an effort to find a cure for a disease that has killed many veterans. One third of those who currently die from mesothelioma, about 3,000 annually, were exposed to asbestos on U.S Navy ships and shipyards, according to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.

Reported cases of mesothelioma have increased in recent years because of the long latency period associated with the asbestos-caused cancer. It can take anywhere from 10 to 50 years after exposure before the onset of the disease.

“This disease is serious and relentless and so must be the attempt to cure it,” Belluck said. “Veterans who were willing to fight for their country now must have their country fight for them.”
