More Oversight of Bus Industry Needed, Houston Attorney Says

Lawyer Brad T. Wyly Says Passengers Have Right to Expect Safe Buses and Drivers.

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) December 22, 2009 -- Bus passengers entrust their lives to bus drivers, so it’s critical that commercial drivers and the buses they operate meet the highest safety standards, a Houston, Texas attorney said.

“The traveling public has a right to expect to arrive safely at their destination when they board a bus,” said lawyer Brad T. Wyly, founder of the Wyly Law Firm, P.C. “They shouldn’t have to worry about drivers falling asleep, or whether the bus is safe. There obviously are holes in the regulatory system that allow unsafe buses and drivers on the highway.”
The traveling public has a right to expect to arrive safely at their destination when they board a bus.... They shouldn’t have to worry about drivers falling asleep, or whether the bus is safe.
The National Transportation Safety Board has called for greater oversight of the passenger bus industry in releasing its findings regarding a January 2008 bus accident in Texas in which one passenger died and 17 people were seriously injured, including two who lost arms.

Transportation Safety Board investigators confirmed in a factual report (NTSB #: HWY-08-MH-011) that the bus driver fell asleep, veered off U.S. 59, then overcorrected, causing the bus to rollover on its side. A pickup truck then struck the bus, which was carrying 47 passengers. The bus was traveling from Monterey, Mexico to Houston when the accident occurred Jan. 2, 2008 south of Victoria, Texas. The driver was only licensed to drive the bus within the state of Texas.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators found numerous holes in the federal regulatory system that allowed a non-compliant bus to be registered and operated on U.S. highways. Investigators urged the Federal Motor Coach Safety Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol to coordinate better to root out buses and other motor coaches that don’t meet U.S. safety standards.
