Belluck & Fox Law Firm Urges Caution When Buying Toys This Holiday Season

Attorney Joseph W. Belluck of Belluck & Fox, LLP says dangerous substances such as asbestos have been found in toys in past holiday seasons.

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 6, 2009 -- As parents shop for children's toys during the holiday season, they should be alert to reports of recalls due to lead paint or asbestos contamination, says a New York personal injury lawyer.

“Close to 230,000 children visit hospital emergency rooms each year due to toy-related injuries,” says Joseph W. Belluck, who practices with Belluck & Fox, LLP in New York. "It is critical that parents are aware of the potential dangers from toys, especially those that contain dangerous substances such as asbestos."
It is critical that parents are aware of the potential dangers from toys, especially those that contain dangerous substances such as asbestos.
The danger from asbestos, a deadly fiber that can cause mesothelioma, is very real, Belluck says. In past holiday seasons, asbestos has been found in a variety of consumer products, including one of the season's biggest-selling Christmas toys, a CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit, as well as two brands of children's play clay.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting consumers and families from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from toys. The CPSC Web site maintains a list of toy recalls and offers an e-mail service that alerts consumers to the latest information about toy recalls.

Mr. Belluck urges consumers to check the CPSC Web site when in doubt about any toy purchase.

"Be vigilant when shopping this holiday season, and keep in mind that not all toys available for sale meet CPSC standards,” he says.

To guard against toy-related injuries, Belluck offers the following safety tips to consider when purchasing toys for friends or family:

  • Avoid toys with sharp edges, points or strings.
  • Be aware of toys that have removable parts that can pose a choking hazard, and avoid marbles, balls, and games with balls with a diameter of 1.75 inches or less.
  • Avoid painted toys which could contain lead.
  • Avoid toys made of PVC plastic which could contain toxic chemicals called phthalates.

"With a little extra care and planning when selecting toys for gifts, this holiday season can be festive and safe for the children on your list," Belluck says.
