Attorney Joseph W. Belluck of Belluck & Fox, LLP, says recommendations for new research to set stricter exposure limits is a worthy goal.
New York, NY (PRWEB) August 14, 2009 -- Despite declines in asbestos use in the United States, far too many workers are still exposed to asbestos, a New York attorney says in reaction to a new federal report.
A report on the current scientific knowledge of asbestos and other mineral fibers, by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, says an estimated 1.3 million construction and general industry workers still face significant exposure to asbestos on the job.
"We know that asbestos causes cancer and other serious respiratory problems, but it's important to continue refining and deepening our knowledge," said Joseph W. Belluck, a New York personal injury attorney with Belluck & Fox, LLP. He concentrates in litigation on asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma."Research that leads to lower exposure limits and greater protection of workers is a worthy national goal," Belluck says.
The NIOSH report summarizes the current scientific understanding of asbestos and other mineral fibers and offers a roadmap to explore unresolved questions. Researchers say an ideal outcome from the NIOSH report would be new scientific studies that supported recommendations for exposure limits to elongated mineral fibers, with the goal of protecting workers' health.
Workers used to be exposed to raw asbestos used in manufacturing processes such as in textile mills and shipyards. Today, with stringent regulations on airborne asbestos in manufacturing, the primary exposure occurs during industrial maintenance activities that stir up dust, and during de-contamination of buildings with asbestos.
Annual deaths from mesothelioma, a cancer closely related to asbestos exposure, increased 7 percent in the U.S. between 1999, when the disease began being categorized separately on death certificates, and 2004, the report said. The disease usually appears 20 to 30 years after exposure.
