Trends, structure and criteria for choosing the right model
Denver, CO (PRWEB) May 6, 2009 -– Shared leadership within private industry is becoming increasingly common. In a family-owned business, this trend can pose special challenges.
Strategic Designs for Learning (SDL) will host a free workshop in Denver exploring issues associated with this management and succession planning trend for family-owned firms. “Shared Leadership in Family-Owned Businesses: Trends, Structures and Criteria for Selecting the Right Leadership Model,” will be held twice, on May 15 and June 11, 2009.
Family businesses are a surprising force in the nation’s economy. Some 35 percent of Fortune 500 companies are family-controlled. Family businesses account for 50 percent of U.S. gross domestic product, generate 60 percent of the country's employment, and 78 percent of all new job creation.
As family businesses mature and grow larger, they become more complex. Original owners often find themselves involving multiple family members, evolving from a controlling-owner business to a sibling partnership or cousin consortium.
With such changes comes the need to determine that the right family members assume the leadership roles. Participants in SDL’s seminar will learn:
- Why succession planning is particularly challenging for family-owned businesses
- How predictive assessment tools can assist in identifying viable succession candidates
- Whether the growing trend of shared leadership might work for their business
Additional considerations for family-owned businesses when creating a shared leadership team include the size of the company, the organization’s culture and values, the complexity of the business and the quality of relationships among family members.
