It may be pointed that a bill was introduced in the 110th Congress to provide legal status and a path to citizenship to the country's approximately 12 million undocument immigrants. Though the bill was portrayed as a compromise, it attracted vehement criticism from both sides of the divide. After losing the last vote on cloture by 34-61, the bill was later revived through a bipartisan deal by the Senate leaders. But it eventually suffered a crushing defeat on June 28, 2007 when the Senate voted 53 to 46 against a motion to end debate and move toward final passage of the legislation. The support was 14 votes short of the 60 required to close the debate.
