In partnership with Urban Dove, NYC, Eltman, Eltman and Cooper has implemented a program to give young, under-privileged students real work experience. The program is the latest in a series of philanthropic efforts by Eltman, the nation's leading credit and collections law firm.
New York (PRWEB) March 4, 2009 -- Eltman, Eltman & Cooper PC, a prominent credit and collections law firm, has teamed up with Urban Dove, a New York City based non-profit, to provide inner city kids with the opportunity to experience a work environment in the business world. Through Urban Dove's Career Exploration Program (CEP), nine students from various high schools around the city came to Eltman to learn about the company, the collections industry, and to become familiar with the dynamics of a corporate setting.
Throughout the duration of the program, which lasted about two months, Eltman employees taught classes that highlighted the different departments within the firm, as well as financial information to benefit the students in their everyday life. The curriculum for the CEP included teaching the young men and women credit management skills, the role of law in society, project planning and other skills directly applicable to their futures as college students. The lessons were presented in engaging and creative ways, using props, skits, and funny, relevant media clips.
After each lesson, the students and 20 Eltman employees broke up into three teams to compete in a challenge that pertained to that week's lesson. The challenges consisted of mock trials, survival games, and investigation and management challenges. During the challenges, the employees and the students got a chance to interact on a personal level and form meaningful relationships.
The CEP proved to be as rewarding for the Eltman employees as it was for the Urban Dove kids. Everyone thought very highly of the students and the CEP in general. "It's very inspiring for me to see the younger generation showing enthusiasm, team spirit and a little bit of humor in completing their tasks," said Lou M. from investigations. "They will need those qualities to compete in today's business world."
Through the CEP, Urban Dove's mission shines through. Urban Dove has dedicated itself to enriching the lives of New York City's at-risk youth by creating a supportive, positive place where kids can develop these critical life-skills and build the confidence they need to reach their full potential. CEP exposes kids to various jobs that they might not have realized were available to them and can help provide a focus to their studies in college. Amazingly, Urban Dove can boast 100% college retention rate.
Eltman is truly grateful to be part of such a wonderful program and looks forward to its continued support in years to come. Echoing the thoughts of all employees that partook in the CEP, Otis M. from the firm's network management team sums its up best. "CEP is doing a great job of shaping the hearts and minds of young people, I really enjoy being part of it."
