As the global financial crisis sees more people return to uni to boost their qualifications, Murdoch University is helping streamline the pathway to study Law with a Pre-Law bridging course.
(PRWEB) February 18, 2009 -- Students usually have to rely on their high school qualifications to be accepted to study law at university, but Murdoch offers a more flexible approach to admission. At Murdoch, prospective students can apply for a place in the Pre-Law course that takes life and work experience into consideration in the application process.
According to Steve Shaw, Murdoch's Program Chair for Law, the Pre-Law course has been designed for students who can demonstrate their intellectual capacity and relevant life experience, but who may not have the academic history that was traditionally required to study law.
"Often, people who have gained an insight into the legal system through work with government agencies, correctional facilities or finance firms have a desire to develop their knowledge further and expand their career opportunities," Mr Shaw said. "The Pre-Law course provides these people with a pathway into the Murdoch Law course and the opportunity to pursue a range of new career paths."
The first Pre-Law course at Murdoch for 2009 runs for one night a week from March 11 to June 10. Students who complete the Pre Law course with a 60% average can enrol in Murdoch's Law degree as early as the following semester.
"The learning program is extremely flexible," Mr Shaw added. "Students need to make a commitment of just one night per week for the Pre-Law course, so it's relatively easy to fit in around work and lifestyle commitments. We have state-of-the art facilities and a fantastic team of lecturers and support staff to make the transition easier for those who might be a bit daunted by attending university."
Murdoch's Law facilities include the Freehills Electronic Moot Court, where students practice real-life courtroom procedures and have live video access to other university law schools around the world. Murdoch's Law School also operates a legal aid centre, which provides free legal advice to the local community, exposing students to a range of real-life cases.
This will be the fourth year Murdoch has provided the Pre-Law course, and according to Mr Shaw, on average about 70 per cent of students who start proceed to study Law at Murdoch.
