The international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, in alliance with Equal Justice Works, named its 2009 Fellows, 10 individuals to receive funding though the Greenberg Traurig Fellowship Foundation to provide legal services pro bono to community programs.
Miami, FL (Vocus/PRWEB ) February 20, 2009 -- The international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, in alliance with Equal Justice Works, named its 2009 Fellows, 10 individuals to receive funding though the Greenberg Traurig Fellowship Foundation to provide legal services pro bono to community programs. The public interest law fellowships begin in September and run for two years. The combined classes of 2008 and 2009 will consist of 21 fellows.
"Every class of Greenberg Traurig fellows is phenomenal and again this year I feel we have another truly extraordinary group," said Holly Skolnick, president and founder of the Greenberg Traurig Fellowship Foundation. "With the rich diversity of these fellows, they are sure to make a significant impact on their communities."
Since the Foundation was founded in 1998, Greenberg Traurig has sponsored, in whole or in part, more than 85 fellows who have worked on innovative public interest projects in many of the communities in which the firm's attorneys practice. The fellowships offers salary and loan repayment assistance, a national training and leadership development program, and other forms of support.
"Greenberg Traurig is the largest provider of fellowships to Equal Justice Works and has been so for years," Skolnick said. "We are very privileged to partner with this organization, which offers matching funds for the fellowships as well as assistance in the selection and training of the fellows."
There are currently 19 Greenberg Traurig sponsored fellows working on projects in various states across the country. The issues they tackle include domestic violence, the elderly, housing, juvenile justice, community economic development, immigration, access to affordable health care and disability rights.
The fellowships currently selected to start in September 2009 are as follows:
Edget Betru, New York University School of Law
Catholic Charities Immigration, Atlanta, GA: Provides holistic legal and social services to unrepresented youth who are in removal proceedings before the Executive Office for Immigration Review in Atlanta, GA and to empower those youth to advocate for themselves.
Flore Blaise Williams, Pace University School of Law
Sanctuary for Families, Bronx, NY: Protects battered immigrant women from the Afro-Caribbean and African Community in the Bronx from deadly violence and dire poverty by providing expert, holistic representation and economic empowerment.
Alana Chazan, City University of New York School of Law at Queens College
Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal), Oakland, CA: Provides urgently needed direct family law legal services, outreach and education to the Bay Area's low-income Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) communities.
Maria Citino, University of Denver College of Law
Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, Chicago, IL: Empowers Latina victims of domestic violence and enable them to create a stable environment for their families by meeting their immediate legal needs through a legal partnership with the Head Start Program.
Abigail Coursolle, University of California at Los Angeles School of Law
Western Center on Law and Poverty, Los Angeles, CA: Enforces California's safety net statute, which requires counties to provide subsistence aid and health care to their neediest residents, through litigation, policy advocacy and coalition building.

Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association, Inc., Orlando, FL: Advocates for services on behalf of the most vulnerable foster youth, those with developmental disabilities that will limit their ability to live independently when they age-out of foster care.

The Legal Center for People with Disabilities and Older People, Denver, CO: Eliminates the unlawful restraint and seclusion of Colorado schoolchildren with developmental disabilities.

Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., Miami, FL: Resolves underlying legal issues contributing to health problems by partnering with pediatric medical providers to improve the overall health and welfare of low-income children and families.

South Brooklyn Legal Services, Brooklyn, NY: Provides direct representation, community education, and legal advocacy to address the needs of women in violent relationships who suffer from mental illness and/or chemical dependency.
