Real Fathers For Justice Wants To See More From Jack Straw On Children's Rights

Justice Secretary Jack Straw recently promised that family court hearings will be open to accredited media for the first time, giving child rights campaigns a much needed boost.

London, UK (PRWEB) December 24, 2008 -- Justice Secretary Jack Straw recently promised that family court hearings will be open to accredited media for the first time, giving child rights campaigns a much needed boost.

In a statement to the House of Commons on 16 December 2008, Mr Straw said that media will be able to attend all levels of family courts. The court will be able to restrict attendance if the welfare of the child requires it, or for the safety and protection of parties or witnesses.

We welcome these recent announcements by the Justice Secretary, but we need to see much more on both child rights and the rights of fathers. The fact that tens of thousands of fathers have to go to court to fight for their parental rights each year is a clear indication that laws need to change further to protect our children who are the innocent victims in court battles.
Courts will be able to restrict what can be reported in order to protect the welfare of children and families. They will also be able to relax reporting rules if an individual case allows this.

Additional proposals for increasing openness include giving the public more information about the way family courts work and how decisions are made.

Mike Kelly, a spokesman for Real Fathers for Justice, said: "We welcome these recent announcements by the Justice Secretary, but we need to see much more on both child rights and the rights of fathers. The fact that tens of thousands of fathers have to go to court to fight for their parental rights each year is a clear indication that laws need to change further to protect our children who are the innocent victims in court battles."

When we finally put our children's rights first, things should change for the better, but until then, thousands of fathers will still have to battle for our children to grow up in a fairer and more humane society.
