Jacksonville, FL (PRWEB) June 28, 2010 -- Honored for his leadership in promoting professionalism and ethics to fellow members of the bar, Joseph P. Milton (http://www.flabarfndn.org/about/news-publications/newsroom/joseph_milton_moh.aspx) recently received the Medal of Honor Award; the highest honor bestowed upon a lawyer by the legal profession in Florida.

The Florida Bar Foundation Medal of Honor Award Program was established in 1977 to recognize outstanding achievements of members of The Florida Bar in duty and service to the public, improvement of the administration of justice, and advancement of the science of jurisprudence in Florida. The award can also be bestowed upon non-lawyers whose accomplishments warrant The Florida Bar Foundation’s highest recognition.

The Florida Bar Foundation presented the 2010 Medal of Honor Award at its 34th annual reception and dinner, which was held on June 24 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in conjunction with The Florida Bar Annual Convention.

Milton, a senior partner with Milton, Leach, Whitman, D'Andrea & Milton, P.A. (http://www.primerus.com/firms/Milton_Leach.htm), has been a pioneer in promoting that professionalism be the driving force in the legal community.

Milton became chairman of the Fourth Judicial Circuit Professionalism Committee, which led to the Circuit and the Jacksonville Bar Association being jointly recognized as an outstanding professionalism program by The Florida Bar in 1999 and, again, in 2001 by the American Bar Association. He also worked on the code of professionalism as chairman of the Trial Lawyers Section of The Florida Bar and served on The Florida Bar Board of Governors when ideals and goals of professionalism were adopted.

Mr. Milton is well recognized for his expertise in handling heavy exposure cases and has 37 years experience in civil trial litigation. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree and again from the University of Florida with his Juris Doctorate degree in 1969. Additionally, Mr. Milton is a proctor in Admiralty certified by the Maritime Law Association and a member of the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute.

Milton has continuously been a strong advocate for the legal needs of the less fortunate. He was recognized in 1981 with the Outstanding Service Award of the Jacksonville Area Legal Aid Clients Council for Individual Contribution in Support of Legal Services for the Poor.

Additional honors include recognition with Lawyer of the Year awards from the Jacksonville Bar Association in 1999 and the Jacksonville Chapter of The American Board of Trial Advocates in 2000. Milton was named Outstanding Trial Lawyer of the Year by FLABOTA in 2000 and received the foundation’s highest public service award.

Established in 1956, The Florida Bar Foundation (flabarfndn.org) is the only statewide organization that funds civil legal services for the poor. Other Foundation programs include grants to improve the justice system, public service fellowships for law students, and loan repayment assistance for attorneys at its legal aid grantee organizations.
