“Fish & Richardson has experienced tremendous growth in our pharmaceutical and biotech IP litigation practice over the past two years,” states Roger Denning, managing principal of the firm’s Southern California practice. “The local life sciences community is rich with innovation and this is a natural place for us to increase our bandwidth to handle even more of this type of work.”

Singer is the national leader of Fish’s pharmaceutical and biotech litigation practice. He joined Fish in 1997 and is relocating half-time to San Diego from Twin Cities. Lavoie has been with Fish for nine years in the firm’s Twin Cities’ office. Both Singer and Lavoie will divide their time between the firm’s California and Twin Cities offices.

Lavoie holds a M.A. and Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry from Princeton University. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School. Prior to law school, Lavoie was an intellectual property specialist for Epix Pharmaceuticals.
With an in-depth ability to understand the fundamental science involved in biotech, pharma, and chemistry innovations and her in-house counsel expertise, Lavoie is a proven asset to start-ups and mid-stage companies.
In her practice, Lavoie represents a range of clients from industry to academia. Her practice focuses on client counseling and strategic portfolio development, patent opinions, due diligence and freedom-to-operate studies, and patent prosecution in the chemical arts. She also has extensive experience in the areas of pharmaceuticals, drug formulation, and drug delivery technologies.
Over the years, Singer has developed a specialty in biotech/pharmaceutical litigation, taking a Hatch-Waxman case to trial in Delaware, along with San Diego principal Juanita Brooks, just last month. His current docket includes over a dozen Hatch-Waxman cases for a variety of clients. His trial experience includes both jury and bench trials, as well as many appearances before administrative and arbitration panels, and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Singer was recognized as a Minnesota Lawyer "Attorney of the Year" in 2007 and 2009 and was named as a Band 1 attorney by Chambers, USA for intellectual property litigation in 2007, 2008, and 2009. He was also named to the "2006 BTI Client Service All-Star Team for Law Firms," which honors attorneys whom corporate counsel have identified as providing outstanding client service.
Singer holds a degree in chemistry from Dartmouth College and a law degree with honors from the University of Chicago Law School.
