Brain Injury Law Center Announces the Free Helmets for Kids Program

The Brain Injury Law Center is giving away CPSC-certified helmets for persons 19 years old or younger, anywhere in the United States, at no cost in an effort to prevent mild and traumatic brain injuries, which are most common in people under the age of 19.

NORFOLK, Virginia (PRWEB) June 22, 2010 -- In an effort to prevent mild and traumatic brain injuries, which are most common in people under the age of 19, and typically attributed to a fall, the Brain Injury Law Center is giving away CPSC-certified helmets for persons 19 years old or younger, anywhere in the United States at no cost.

Stephen M. Smith, a lawyer and advocate on behalf of those that have suffered mild and traumatic brain injuries has offered to give away helmets until December 31st of 2010 at no cost. “There are many organizations out there that offer helmets during the month of March - Brain Injury Awareness Month – and while their efforts have been great, the fact remains that brain injuries occur year round, and many are preventable with the use of a CPSC-certified helmet. ” Mr. Smith stated.

The helmets offered by Brain Injury Law Center, based in Hampton Roads, Virginia, all meet the US Consumer Product Safety Commission stands, and are available in an assortment of colors and sizes for a secure fit.

According to the Center for Disease Control, there are over 1.4 million traumatic brain injuries suffered each year in the United States alone. Of these incidents:

 
  • 50,000 people will die;
  • 235,000 are hospitalized; and
  • 1.1 million are treated and released from emergency care.

The two groups at the highest risk for TBI are 0 to 4 year old and 15 to 19 year olds
Causes for a traumatic brain injury or “TBI” as they are often referred to are:
 
  • 28% - Falls
  • 20% - Motor vehicle and trucking accidents
  • 19% - Struck by or against an object
  • 11% - Assaults
An injury related such as an anoxic brain injury, can also leave a person permanently disabled due to a lack of oxygen to the brain.
