La Mesa, CA (PRWEB) June 3, 2010 -- Clayton M. Anderson, Senior Partner of the law firm of Anderson & Kriger, volunteers time and donations of food and water to victims of the Baja Earthquake which occurred on Easter Sunday.
 We found out that going across the border with supplies is a bit of a challenge, but there are plenty of opportunities to provide help on this side of the border.

Brad Schuber, an associate attorney in the La Mesa office, joined Mary J and Clayton, along with East San Diego county political activist and Congressional candidate Ray Lutz, in the initial 1½ hour drive to El Centro. Pastor Ron Griffen of The First United Methodist Church of El Centro, told us of the damage in his community and the need for supplies on both sides of the border. His church suffered minor damage while houses in the area slipped off their foundations and chimneys fell over. Some members of his church own farms south of Mexicali and they described the destruction to roads and buildings which made driving difficult. More than 30,000 people have been displaced.
Pastor Griffen said many poor people in his community are in great need and will not be helped by the government. Thus they are setting up a $1 Million fund to help earthquake victims and our contributions were the first to be made.
Neighborhood House in Calexico
We were directed to a Methodist organization in Calexico called the Neighborhood House by Pastor Griffen. It took us about 30 minutes to drive there and meet Father Filipe who coordinates relief efforts in Mexico and supervises about 50 small churches between Mexicali and San Felipe. Father Filipe spoke some English but it was helpful to have Mary J with us to translate.
After unloading the water, clothes, canned goods, hygiene and other supplies, we drove by the hotel where 117 older residents had to leave due to quake damage. There are thousands of residents of Calexico who were driven from their homes, many of them children, and they are struggling to get back to normal.
Donations and supplies are still needed, and we may focus primarily on providing transportation of supplies being gathered in San Diego as part of the earthquake relief effort.
It is difficult to get the supplies out to the valley. Our first trip on April 24th helped make the necessary connection with the Neighborhood House. Father Filipe told us the Mexican government restricts the amount of relief supplies that are allowed in so it will be necessary to follow the guidelines when planning our next trip.
