Lawyer Michael A. Abelson says new law protects working families who have loved ones hurt in accidents.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 20, 2010 — Michael Abelson, a lawyer who practices in Maryland and Washington, D.C., says he supports the State of Maryland’s new law requiring higher minimums for automotive liability insurance.
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley signed a bill into law May 4 that increases the minimum amounts of coverage for bodily claims or death from a motor vehicle accident -- from $20,000 to $30,000 for one person, and from $40,000 to $60,000 for any two or more individuals.
The law applies to all vehicle liability insurance policies issued, delivered or renewed in the state, starting January 1, 2011.
The law increases minimum liability limits for vehicle owners' auto insurance for the first time in 38 years. Those who carry comprehensive automotive insurance with higher coverage -- as many as 90 percent of drivers in the state by some estimates -- will not be affected.
Opponents of the measure say it will drive up the costs of insurance premiums. But Abelson said the change is needed to protect working families.
“Maryland’s law follows the national trend of increasing liability minimums, and it’s appropriate,” Abelson said. “Working families are the ones who suffer the most from the cost of accidents and injuries, because they typically don’t have financial resources to draw from to cover months and even years worth of expenses. This new law is about protecting them from other drivers' negligence.”
