Singer Benny Mardones and Attorney Dan Cytryn held a fundraiser for Parkinson's research in Coral Springs on May 1st. The event, which included performances by Benny Mardones and local guitarist Nicholas Marks, raised over $7,000 for the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
Pompano Beach, FL (PRWEB) May 9, 2010 -- Singer Benny Mardones and Attorney Dan Cytryn raised thousands for Parkinson's research at a fundraiser held in Coral Springs, Florida on May 1st.
Dan Cytryn of Cytryn & Velazquez, a personal injury firm, and his wife Jill, held the fundraiser at their Coral Springs home. Benny Mardones was the headliner at the event, and put on a powerful performance of some of his most famous songs. Mardones is the writer and singer of the hit song “Into the Night,” which was recently remade by Usher. Mardones has Parkinson’s, and has been an advocate for Parkinson’s research for years.
The fundraiser successfully raised more than $7,000 to benefit the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, a non-profit organization. Mr. Mardones has been involved in fundraising efforts to benefit the Keck School of USC for years. Dr. Mark Lew, Professor of Clinical at the Keck School, whom Benny has worked directly with for his Parkinson’s, is currently researching new treatments for Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson’s disease is a movement disorder that is reported to affect about a million people in the U.S. The disease is commonly known to cause tremors in the hands and legs and has other serious debilitating conditions. The cause of this disease is unknown and there is currently no cure.
Mr. Cytryn became interested in this disease when he met Mr. Mardones two years ago at a fundraising event for Parkinson’s in Coral Springs. "Meeting Benny, seeing how this affects him, and realizing how debilitating this disease is has made me want to work together to try to develop a cure or treatment for this horrific disease,” says Cytryn. “I've been friendly for years with a guy who since his early 50's has the disease with terrible tremors, and he won't even go to lunch with me out of embarrassment that he can't eat without assistance and constant shaking or spilling of his food. If we can do something or help in any way, it's a good feeling to contribute and raise money."
