Vasont Systems Contributes Content Management Expertise to New Book on Virtual Collaborative Writing

Collaborative writing book “eats its own dog food” as contributors collaborate virtually and document their experiences.

Emigsville, PA (PRWEB) April 5, 2010 -- Vasont Systems, a leading provider of content management systems and data services, today announced their participation in the upcoming publication, Virtual Collaborative Writing in the Workplace: Computer-Mediated Communication Technologies and Processes, edited by Beth L. Hewett, University of Maryland University College, and Charlotte Robidoux, Hewlett-Packard. Suzanne Mescan, VP of Marketing for Vasont Systems, was invited to be a contributing author for the book to provide information on emerging trends in virtual collaborative writing using content management technology. The book is scheduled for publication in May, 2010 by IGI Global.

This book investigates the use of computer-mediated communication technologies, including everything from instant messaging and e-mail to interaction on Web pages, Webcasts, and content management systems, to facilitate effective interdependent collaboration in writing projects. This book focuses on the type of writing that typically occurs in virtual workplace settings, such as academic institutions, private and for-profit industry, and the government, in which the purpose of the writing is to convey information or argue a position rather than to socialize or entertain. What makes this book stand out from others like it is the fact that it was written collaboratively through the use of Wikis and Google Docs and that it provides a meta-analysis of the development process of the book from conception to completion.

Virtual Collaborative Writing in the Workplace is a welcome addition to the list of books treating workplace practice, in this case, extending exploration to the digital world.
Mescan’s contributed chapter discusses four case studies on collaboration using content management technology. The case studies provide a look at how small and large writing teams have each successfully implemented content management technology and improved collaboration in varying environments—within a department; between multiple departments; within a division; and across several divisions of their respective organizations.

“Chapters such as Mescan's exploration of workplace case studies provide a nice continuation from the now classic Karis and Lay text, Collaborative Writing in Industry,” said TyAnna Herrington, Associate Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology. “Virtual Collaborative Writing in the Workplace is a welcome addition to the list of books treating workplace practice, in this case, extending exploration to the digital world.”
