PEM Inc. Introduces Plan to Directly Track Carbon in Maine Forests

Direct measurement and tracking of forest carbon on large scales is key to carbon pricing and trading but is lacking. Estimation of forest carbon as currently used is highly uncertain. PEMs unique field analyzer technology and data services now under development and testing aims to fill this critical carbon gap for forests from Maine to Indonesia.

"A forest carbon-currency is within our technological reach and can be harmonized across forests from Maine to Indonesia, resulting in economic benefits to landowners and options for forest management and stewardship"

Portland, ME (PRWEB) March 25, 2010 -- The forests of the world are becoming increasingly important in the carbon economy but lack direct measurement and global standardization methods to ensure economic value and compliance realization. Planetary Emissions Management Inc. (www.pem-carbon.com)
is developing unique field analyzers and data services that directly measure and account for forest carbon reducing reliance on estimation.

PEM’s technologies will include real-time networks of analyzers for rare forms of carbon dioxide (CO2) containing 13C and 14C isotopes that directly track carbon released and absorbed by the forest areas monitored. Maine’s 20+ million acres of forests could prove to be a significant economic asset in terms of carbon sequestration but verifying the amounts is a challenging process.

"A forest carbon-currency is within our technological reach and can be harmonized across forests from Maine to Indonesia, resulting in economic benefits to landowners and options for forest management and stewardship" remarked Bruno D.V. Marino, CEO and Founder of PEM. "California's singular legislative efforts to down-regulate carbon emissions, including proposed forest credits, may well foreshadow global fundamental issues of measurement, monitoring and accounting required to support credible carbon pricing and offset markets. There is too much at stake to ignore the role of technological innovation in expanding bottom-up, actual measurements of carbon emissions with adequate precision," added Marino. The project is in the R&D and planning stages.

PEM has organized a working group to explore forest carbon trading and forest stewardship in Maine with interns from The University of Southern Maine that is open to interested parties. PEM’s Portland office is located at the Maine Center for Enterprise Development (MCED) on the campus of the University of Southern Maine (www.mced.biz).

The objective of PEM’s Maine Forest Carbon Project is to develop implementation and funding plans for its core carbon monitoring technology, the Global Monitor Platform and proprietary reporting framework, in selected networks of forest cover resulting ultimately in carbon credits. John O’Sullivan, PEM’s CFO/COO and Project Director in Maine is “looking forward to applying PEM technology in Maine and working with landowners to provide a potential source of jobs and economic return for the State.” For more information contact: maineforest(at)pem-carbon(dot)com.
