About 90 paralegals and personal injury attorneys from Greenville to Asheville attended the Jan. 22 seminar, either live or via simulcast.

The seminar addressed the critical issue of what to do when an accident victim reaches an agreed upon settlement with the at-fault party, but others have claims on the money. Examples might include:

An accident victim has health insurance which paid for his treatment. In what circumstances does his health insurance company have a claim to a portion of the settlement money? An accident victim is a city bus driver injured by a reckless driver. Workers’ Compensation paid for his lost wages and medical treatments. How much should Workers’ Compensation get reimbursed from the settlement? An accident victim requires ongoing medical treatments, and Medicare wants to be reimbursed for this treatment. Are all of Medicare’s claims actually related to the injury?

Donald Bardes has 15 years of experience in the legal field, eight as an attorney and the remainder as a paralegal. He is admitted to multiple federal courts.
