Outten & Golden LLP is hosting a reception on January 20, 2010 at its New York office to honor the work of A Better Balance, an organization dedicated to promoting the employment rights of working parents and care givers.
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 20, 2010 -- A Better Balance will receive Outten & Golden's first annual Public Interest Award during a reception hosted by O&G to celebrate and highlight the important work of this New York-based organization. A Better Balance is dedicated to promoting equality in the workplace and expanding choices for men and women, regardless of income level, so they may care of their families without sacrificing their economic security.
Outten & Golden LLP, a national preeminent employee rights firm, is pleased to recognize the achievements and mission of A Better Balance (ABB), founded in 2005 to address the care crisis facing American workers and their families. "Discrimination against workers with family responsibilities, including pregnancy discrimination, is on the rise. A Better Balance has been a leader in promoting paid family and sick leave as well as human rights protection for employees throughout the country." says Wayne Outten, managing partner of Outten & Golden.
ABB works at the national, state and local levels to change the American workplace to address the needs of today's families. In conjunction with Outten and Golden LLP, A Better Balance has pioneered a clinic to help those facing discrimination because of their family responsibilities. Working with local groups around the country, ABB has helped introduce legislation on paid family and sick leave in 15 states and localities and has been involved in Federal efforts to make paid leave a reality for the millions of workers in the U.S. who have none. Here in New York, ABB has helped lead a coalition to obtain paid family leave at the state level and paid sick days in New York City. ABB has worked tirelessly to bring issues related to the needs of those with caregiving responsibilities into the public eye. It is the only national legal organization dedicated to issues involving work-family balance.During this time of recession, the support of an organization like ABB for America's families is especially critical. According to Dina Bakst, Co-President & Board Chair of ABB, "The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reported a 65% increase in pregnancy discrimination claims between 1992 and 2007 and the situation has only gotten worse during this recession: complaints filed with the EEOC in 2008 jumped by 12.5% over 2007 as more pregnant women were targeted for layoffs." In fact, "one woman told us she was asked to leave her company when she was eight months pregnant because her pregnancy 'didn't look right for the company.'"
ABB partners with other non-profit organizations and attorneys in public and private practice throughout the country in its work to improve the rights of employees who are dealing with family responsibilities.
