Firm Wins $7.2 Million in Helicopter Crash Jury Trial in Iowa and $15 Million Settlement in Chicago Plane Crash
Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) January 26, 2010 -- The aviation law firm of Robb & Robb LLC in Kansas City, Missouri, just completed another blockbuster year with a record jury verdict in Iowa and a record settlement in a plane crash in Chicago.
The helicopter crash jury trial, Schlotzhauer v. The Final Season, Inc., Case No. CL 102824, was tried for five weeks in Des Moines, Iowa starting June 8, 2009 with the jury verdict of $7.2 million returned on July 13, 2009. The firm represented Kathryn Schlotzhauer, whose husband, Roland, was a cameraman aboard the Bell 206B helicopter which the pilot flew into utility wires. The firm also claimed lost income on behalf of the widow in the amount of $1.8 million. The $7.2 million jury verdict is the highest aircrash jury verdict in the history of the State of Iowa.
"This is a very high jury verdict considering that this is a conservative jurisdiction," explained partner Anita Porte Robb. "Everyone told us no jury would award more than $2 to $3 million for the wrongful death of a spouse where the couple had no children."
In the Chicago case, aviation lawyers Robb & Robb represented the family of Michael Waugh, who had been a General Manager and partner of Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab restaurant, one of the leading restaurants in Chicago. Waugh was flying back with his Morgan Stanley financial advisors from Olathe, Kansas, where they had visited Waugh's father. On the final approach, the pilot, who was employed by Morgan Stanley, stalled the aircraft and it crashed, killing all aboard.
After three and a half years of litigation, settlement talks were initiated with the defendants and a cash settlement in the amount of $15 million was reached on October 14, 2009.
"This is the largest aircrash settlement ever in the State of Illinois," said partner Gary C. Robb. "The family will be taken care of for life and that is a great comfort for all concerned." The full case style is Lisa A. Waugh, et. al. v. Morgan Stanley & Co., et. al., Case No. 2006L001410, Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.
