Ghost Bikes Memorialize Fallen Riders

Ghost Bikes remind drivers of their great responsibility when they get behind the wheel, an effort New York personal injury lawyers support.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 26, 2010 -- Last week, a group of cyclists dedicated ten more "Ghost Bike" memorials during the fifth annual Memorial Ride, a cycle tour across Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. Ghost Bikes are somber memorials commemorating bicyclists whose lives were lost while they were riding through the streets of New York City with the support of personal injury lawyers.

Ghost Bikes usually appear within one week of a cyclist death. The victim had to have been killed while out for a ride. To create a Ghost Bike, a spare bicycle is covered in white paint and chained to a signpost near the scene of the death. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place.

In 2009 approximately ten cyclists were killed on New York streets, according to Transportation Alternatives, a group that advocates safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as the use of public transportation.

"Any effort that makes drivers become more aware of the danger to cyclists is a worthwhile pursuit New York personal injury lawyers applaud," said David Perecman, a personal injury lawyer with a firm in Manhattan, New York.
