The Trent Foundation was established in 1977 by Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans and her second husband, Dr. James H. Semans, to honor the memory of her first husband, Dr. Josiah Charles Trent. Attorney Ben P. Jones of Norwich, Vermont was elected President. Jones is 1991 graduate of Duke University and 1995 graduate of University of Virginia School of Law. Charlotte, N.C. attorney Josiah C.T. Lucas was elected as a new member of the Board. Mr. Lucas is a partner in the law firm of McGuireWoods LLP where he concentrates in the areas of public finance and banking.
Durham, NC (PRWEB) December 17, 2009 -- At its Fall 2009 meeting, the Board of Directors of the Josiah Charles Trent Memorial Foundation elected Ben P. Jones as the new President of the Board. Mr. Jones replaces Sarah Trent Harris, who is retiring from the Board after 25 years of service, including the last 14 years as President. Mr. Jones is an attorney and consultant for the telecommunications industry. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University (Class of 1991) and a Juris Doctor degree from The University of Virginia School of Law (Class of 1995). Mr. Jones lives and works in Norwich, Vermont.
Additionally, the Board of Directors of the Trent Foundation elected Josiah C.T. Lucas as a new member of the Board. Mr. Lucas is a partner in the law firm of McGuireWoods LLP where he concentrates in the areas of public finance and banking. Mr. Lucas received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Class of 1985) and his Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law (Class of 1988). He lives and works in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Also, Peter English, MD, PhD was elected as the Board’s Vice President. Dr. English is a Professor of History and Professor of Pediatrics at Duke University. James E. Coleman, Jr. was elected as the Board’s Secretary and Treasurer. Mr. Coleman is the John S. Bradway Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law.
Continuing their service as Directors of the Trent Foundation are Duke University’s former Vice Provost and current Alice Mary Baldwin Professor of History William H. Chafe, former Duke University Trustee Rebecca Trent Kirkland, MD (daughter of Dr. Trent), and former Duke University Trustee and current Associate Consulting Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Jean Spaulding, MD.

The Trent Foundation assists faculty and staff members of Duke University by providing seed grants for projects addressing medical history, medical humanities, human sexual function and international studies. Since its inception in 1978, the Trent Foundation has awarded 504 grants totaling more than $1.39 million to Duke faculty and staff members. Together with members of the Trent and Semans families, the Foundation also established the Josiah Charles Trent Professorship in the History of Medicine and the Josiah Charles Trent Scholar in Medical Humanities at Duke University, to support two of Dr. Trent’s lifelong passions.
