Dallas Motorcycle Accident Attorney Nick Feizy from Feizy Law Office Reports on Motorcycle Safety Statistics

Dallas personal injury attorney Nick Feizy reveals some interesting statistics about motorcycle traffic safety. As evidenced by the research from the government, motorcycle drivers are much more susceptible to serious injury or death as compared to other types of vehicles.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) December 22, 2009 -- According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a study done from 1997 to 2007 shows a steady increase in the number of related fatalities for motorcycle accidents each and every year. For example, in 1997 there were 2,116 motorcycle collision fatalities compared to 5,154 in 2007. In 2007, out of the 5,154 motorcycle deaths, 375 were in the State of Texas. The NHTSA points out that in 2007 half of motorcycle crashes that were fatal involved a collision with another motorized vehicle. When the crash was between two vehicles, 78% of the time the fatality was because of the motorcycles being struck in the front and only 5% of the time the fatality was due to the motorcycles being struck in the rear. In 2007 36% of fatal motorcycle crashes were due to speeding compared to 24% for passenger car drivers, 19 % for light truck drivers and 8% for large truck drivers.

Additionally, in 2007, 26% of motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes had an invalid license, compared to 13% for fatalities involved with passenger cars. Furthermore, in 2007 the percentage of motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes with blood alcohol content BAC of .08 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher was the highest for any other type of motorized vehicle. The percentages were 27% for motorcycles, 23% for passenger cars, 23% for light trucks and 1% for large trucks. According to the NHTSA 1,784 lives were saved in 2007 due to the use of helmets and another 800 lives could have been saved if helmets were worn. Helmets are considered to be 37% effective in saving lives of motorcyclists (DOT HS 810 990).

Motorcycle drivers are in a greater risk of severe injury or death than other types of motorized vehicles.
As noted above, accident attorney Nick Feizy points out that motorcycle drivers are in a greater risk of severe injury or death than other types of motorized vehicles. Many of these injuries could be saved by simply wearing a helmet and staying away from alcohol when riding motorcycles.
