New York, NY (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 3, 2009 -- The international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP marked the National Pro Bono Week Celebration, held on October 25-31st, with a series of events in its offices across the United States, as well as the presentation of its first annual pro bono awards, honoring attorneys from across the firm.
Special pro bono lunches were held in five of the firm’s offices, featuring presentations from current and former Greenberg Traurig Equal Justice Works Public Law Fellows. The fellows shared their experiences and accomplishments during their firm-sponsored fellowships. They also discussed the many volunteer opportunities and pro bono projects available to the firm's attorneys. In addition, Greenberg Traurig presented its first annual Outstanding Pro Bono Service Awards, which recognize attorneys from across the firm who go “above and beyond” in their pro bono work. This year, 25 attorneys were honored for their hard work and commitment to pro bono. The criteria for the awards include the number of hours the attorneys have devoted to pro bono work, the overall impact of their work, and whether the attorneys have successfully recruited others in the firm to participate in pro bono projects. The 2009 Pro Bono Office of the Year Award was presented to the Houston office for its widespread involvement in a variety of exciting and unique pro bono projects. The Houston office’s dedication to pro bono matters is an office-wide commitment, encompassing the efforts of shareholders, associates, paralegals and staff.
“Greenberg Traurig’s commitment to pro bono work is a key part of our firm’s unique culture,” said pro bono shareholder Holly R. Skolnick. “National Pro Bono Week was the perfect opportunity for us to recognize our attorneys' pro bono work and also promote new opportunities in which they can get involved. Greenberg Traurig’s multi-office celebration of National Pro Bono Week underscores the firm’s commitment to providing pro bono legal services to people in need."
Sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, the National Pro Bono Week Celebration is a coordinated national effort to showcase the great difference that pro bono lawyers make to the nation, its system of justice, its communities and, most of all, to the clients they serve. The week is also dedicated to the quest for more pro bono volunteers to meet the ever-growing legal needs of this country's most vulnerable citizens.
