Dallas, TX (PRWEB) October 9, 2009 -- Mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure, is difficult to diagnose and may not appear for decades after contact. The Mulligan Law Firm is currently investigating injury claims involving asbestos exposure and development of mesothelioma cancer.

Asbestos has been mined and used in North America since the late 1800s, with its use greatly expanded during World War II. A group of silicate compounds that occur naturally in nature, asbestos is resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals, and does not conduct electricity, very useful qualities for many kinds of building and construction.

Asbestos is dangerous to health because when an asbestos product is worked with, microscopic fibers of the mineral are released into the air in the form of dust, which can be inhaled. The particles also stick to clothing, skin, and hair, and anyone who comes into contact with that person may also be exposed to asbestos dust. Asbestos particles stay in the air for a long time, small, light, odorless, colorless and tasteless. They can be breathed into the lungs and stay in the lungs.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue (the mesothelium) that covers the internal organs. The American Cancer Society reports that between two and three thousand people are diagnosed with mesothelioma in the US each year.

There are four main types of mesothelioma: pleural malignant mesothelioma, in the tissue surrounding the lungs, the most common form; peritoneal mesothelioma, in the tissue around your abdomen; pericardial mesothelioma, in the tissue surrounding the heart and mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis, in the lining of the testicles.

Some factors that may increase the risk of mesothelioma are direct asbestos exposure at home or work, living with someone who was directly exposed, smoking, simian virus 40 (SV40), radiation, and a family history that includes mesothelioma cancer.

The signs of mesothelioma vary, depending on where in the mesothelium the cancer occurs.

Pleural (lung) mesothelioma, the most common, may have the following symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Pleurisy - Painful breathing
  • Dry or Painful coughing
  • Pain under the rib cage
  • Lumps of tissue under the skin on your chest
  • Unexplained weight loss

Peritoneal mesothelioma may have the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain or swelling
  • Change in your bowel habits: diarrhea or constipation
  • Lumps of tissue in the abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss

Symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma and mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis
The other forms of mesothelioma are so rare that not much information is available. The signs of pericardial mesothelioma may include difficulty breathing or chest pains. Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis might be first detected as a mass on a testicle.
