ELT Survey Shows That With or Without EFCA, Unions Are Top of Mind for Employers This Fall

Survey Findings Show that a Majority of Employers are Creating Union Awareness Action Plans

San Francisco (PRWEB) September 24, 2009 -- The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) has sparked a nationwide debate over its potential to effect the most sweeping changes to labor law that this country has seen in the past 70 years, making every employer a union target. Even though EFCA has yet to pass in Congress, union activity is spiking, and employers are taking notice.

In a survey of more than six hundred legal and HR professionals conducted this fall by ELT, the leading specialists in ethics and workplace compliance training, 52.9 percent of respondents indicated their organizations are already providing union awareness training to their workforce. These employers have recognized the acute need to train their managers (most of whom have absolutely no experience dealing with unions) not only on union awareness and labor law compliance, but also on the good management practices essential to creating a fair and productive workplace where employees do not want or need a union. Furthermore, 68.9 percent of employers surveyed are developing an EFCA response plan to help keep their workplaces union free.

"Media coverage of EFCA is swinging from one extreme to the other, with the headlines announcing EFCA's assured passage, or its certain death," says Shanti Atkins, President & CEO of ELT. "With all this back and forth, the real issue is being missed – our new Administration's clear support for unions and the DOL's resilient determination to make union organizing easier."

Obama has made it clear that he sees unions as part of the solution to our current recession, and our new Labor Secretary, Hilda Solis, has pronounced that unions are today, 'more important than ever.' Employers are taking notice of these strong sentiments, and as ELT's recent survey results clearly demonstrate, employers are recognizing the need to be proactive and stay ahead of the curve.

"With Obama's recent nominations to the National Labor Relations Board, it's also critical to understand the magnitude of change taking place at the NLRB, which has the ability to significantly ease restraints on union organizing without intervention by Congress," explains Atkins. "With or without EFCA, a revamped NLRB is poised to effect major union-friendly policy changes. The writing is on the wall for increased organizing activity, and employers need to be prepared."

ELT's new Positive Employee Relations & Union Awareness course is a perfect solution for training large and dispersed manager populations on good management practices, labor law compliance, union awareness, and union organizing. The course’s online modular delivery makes successfully educating managers simple, quick, and extremely cost-effective.

"One of the main reasons employees turn to unions is because of bad managers," says Atkins. "Training supervisors on union awareness and good management practices is critical to creating and sustaining a great workplace where employees don't feel the need for third-party representation."
