Verrill Dana attorney's Liz Frankel and Valerie Wright pro bono work results in woman's release from prison while she awaits appeal
Portland, ME (PRWEB) July 9, 2009 -- The linked article, In Search of Justice: Bail Granted for HIV Pregnant Woman appeared on the RH Reality Check website, on June 17, 2009. The article covered the story of a pregnant woman from Cameroon, who was arrested on charges of false immigration documents. The woman's sentence was extended by Judge John Woodcock, on the basis that she was HIV and he felt she would receive better treatment, were she required to give birth in prison.
Verrill Dana attorneys Liz Frankel and Valerie Wright took on the case pro bono, and submitted an emergency amicus brief in the case of the United States of America vs. "Ms. T" (Case number 09-19-B-W) that stated that the treatment she would get in prison was not in fact preferable, and the Judge ordered the release of the woman while she awaits an appeal.
