Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) July 21, 2009 -- Latest research findings in a report issued by Javelin Strategy & Research shows that 9.9 million adults in the US are victims of identity theft. This is a 22 percent increase since 2007, which brings this crime back up to levels not seen since 2004. These findings highlight the persistent increase of fraud and the need for Americans to be more vigilant than ever in their efforts to protect themselves from it. They also highlight the need to take action to identify unrecognizable items in their credit reports.
As the nation's leading credit correction firm, Lexington Law has seen the disastrous effect of identity theft on its clients' credit reports. Over the course of its 18-year history, the firm has helped many victims recover from identity theft by assisting them in the removal of inaccurate information from their credit reports--freeing clients to focus on their future, rather than on a negative credit history created by someone else's fraudulent actions.
The report also showed that in cases in which identity fraud was reported, 71 percent of the fraud incidents occurred within one week from when the data was first stolen--up from 33 percent in 2005. These findings emphasize the need for consumers to persistently and regularly monitor their credit reports. In fact, many victims are not even aware that there are fraudulent items in their reports.
"Sometimes it can be difficult for victims of identity theft to know where to begin. Because our credit scores are so important and come into play in so many facets of our lives, it is vital that consumers take action and begin monitoring their credit reports. As fraudsters continue to find unique ways to gain consumers' personal information, our firm is continually working to develop new ways for our clients to recover from the havoc wreaked by identity theft," says John Heath, Lexington Law's Directing Attorney.
