New York City Ranks Top in the Nation for Road Rage: New York Auto Accident Attorney Recommends Caution

New York car accident attorney, David Perecman, responds to New York's misplaced pride in its latest honor with rage of his own.

New York, NY - June 22, 2009 -- A new study ranks New York City drivers as the worst in the U.S. for road rage. New Yorkers interviewed by the New York Post were proud of having won the title for being the angriest and most aggressive, which is discouraging to New York Auto Accident Attorneys.

"It's ridiculous that any reasonable person would be proud of a prize that's won by putting so many lives at great risk," says David Perecman, a New York auto accident attorney familiar with the numbers of personal injuries and fatalities caused by auto accidents.

New York City already has a higher annual percentage of auto accidents due to a number of factors inherent with its population and geography, adds Perecman, citing data compiled by his New York auto accident firm. These factors include dense population, multiple distractions, constant road construction, and a high volume of pedestrian and bike traffic along perpetually congested streets.

The fourth annual "In the Driver's Seat 2009 AutoVantage Road Rage Survey", released on June 16, 2009, was conducted to determine the driving habits and attitudes of drivers across the nation and gain insight on commuter views on the topic of road rage. The report, a favorite of auto accident attorneys, comes from a poll of 2,518 drivers in 25 cities. Factors that define road rage include temper loss, lane cutting, tailgating, speeding, and honking.

When asked what they thought were the major causes of road rage, responses included: Bad and careless driving by others, traffic problems, drivers who talk on their cell phones, drivers who eat, text or e-mail behind the wheel, speeding, tailgating, and "inconsiderate, disrespectful, selfish drivers who think they own the road."

Last year, New York placed third in the survey. The other cities on this year's top five Least Courteous list are Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Atlanta, and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Last year's winner, Miami, ranked a distant seventh. On the other extreme, Portland, Ore. was named the Most Courteous City in America, moving up from the number two spot last year. Cleveland, Baltimore, Sacramento and Pittsburgh round out the top five cities in the Most Courteous category.
